5th International Day of Yoga
To mark the 5th International Day of Yoga, the Embassy of India, Bucharest, will be organizing an event in the National Arena Stadium, Maior Ion Coravu Str. (VIP area), Bucharest, on Friday, 21 June, 2019 at 0930 hours. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and will also be attended by the Romanian dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, Romanian and Indian diaspora communities.
Background:
While addressing the 69th Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi urged the world community to adopt an International Day of Yoga. On December 11, 2014, the 193 member UNGA approved by consensus with a record 177 co-sponsoring countries a resolution to establish 21 June as “International Day of Yoga”. In its resolution, the UNGA recognized that Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being and wider dissemination of information about the benefits of practicing Yoga for the health of the world population. Yoga also brings harmony in all walks of life and thus, is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle-related disorders.
The Secretary General to the United Nations stated that through the Adoption of the UN Resolution on the International Day of Yoga, “the General Assembly has recognized the holistic benefits of this timeless practice and its inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the United Nations”. He further stated: “Yoga offers a simple, accessible and inclusive means to promote physical and spiritual health and well-being. It promotes respect for one’s fellow human beings and for the planet we share. And yoga does not discriminate; to varying degrees, all people can practice, regardless of their relative strength, age or ability.”
