YOGA FOR WELL-BEING – INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA 2021 BEING CELEBRATED IN ROMANIA, MOLDOVA AND ALBANIA
International Day of Yoga 2021 comes after a period of great suffering in the world due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Peoples’ lives have been turned upside down, many have succumbed to illness and huge numbers are left to pick up the broken pieces of a storm that nobody expected to become so ravaging. Not only physical health has been affected, but psychological issues have either been exacerbated or have surfaced from the depths because of the cumulative effects of sudden changes, restrictions and prolonged periods of isolation.
During these delicate and difficult times, the goals of Yoga – physical and mental well-being by the incorporation of specific practices into the daily routine – have never been more appropriate. These trying times have highlighted, once again, that embracing Yoga can help in staying fit and healthy, but can also keep isolation, depression and anxiety at bay. Not to mention the positive effects in the case of COVID patients, contributing to the recovery of their lost physical, mental and social balance.
As the International Day of Yoga 2021 is one of the first global events to mark the steps of return to normalcy, this year’s celebrations nestle under the “Yoga for Well-Being” canopy. International organizations, such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization, mention Yoga as an important means to improve health by being more active and taking care of both body and mind. UNICEF reminds us that children can practice Yoga poses with no risks whatsoever, therefore both adults and children may reap the benefits offered by this ancient system.
Broadening the knowledge – what is Yoga?
Derived from the Sanskrit term “yoga” – meaning uniting, joining – it is an age-old system that brings together practices to soothe body, mind and spirit. Its popularity has grown exponentially over the last decades, which was reason enough for the United Nations to proclaim 21st June the International Day of Yoga (by resolution 69/131) on 11th December 2014. Naturally, the draft resolution was proposed by India and a record of 175 member states endorsed it. Introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, his words of wisdom are to be noted “Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature”. As the Ambassador of India in Albania, Moldova and Romania, Mr. Rahul Shrivastava, likes to put it, “Yoga is India’s free gift to the world. It simply needs to reach people and those willing to see and understand shall take good advantage of its treasures”.
